As humans we all have inevitable moments of judgment that appear in our day-to-day lives, challenging our own thoughts. It seems obvious that being open-minded is an important skill to carry with us, but this can be challenging in many ways.

My coaching clients know that one thing I always encourage them to do is remain open-minded, especially in critical phases of growth and change.

Reading Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” affirmed this thought for me as I read the pages filled with tales of limiting beliefs, misunderstandings, the struggles of culture versus change, and breaking traditions. All of the following attribute to a lack of open-minded thinking.

So if you find yourself in a moment of friction, ask yourself: “Am I truly being open-minded?”

Take a moment to recalibrate your thoughts and remain open-minded.

Here’s how to get started.

Question your own mindset.

It all begins with you. Address your current standing and take inventory of yourself and your values. Do you have any limiting beliefs standing in the way? Sometimes breaking tradition means challenging mindsets and ingrained learnings.

Listen first.

Put your biases aside and process with empathy. Just listen! Sometimes in silence, you find the solutions.

Be mindful.

Don’t just listen to prepare a response. Be present in moments of learning. Engage authentically and ask questions without judgment.
