Learning and advancing together, inclusively holds precedence in my many passions; we can do so by using literature to build a bridge for meaningful conversation- and that’s how Better All Together was born!

For our first episode of Better All Together, it was clear to kick start our community series by paying homage to the extraordinary legend, Ms. Cicely Tyson. For many, Ms. Tyson stood for core values that make each of us who we are today, including me. Her memoir, “Just As I Am” is the cherry on top of her inimitable 96-year life and 60 plus year career.

Here are a few of those gems I will carry with me moving forward thanks to Ms. Tyson.

Show up authentically, no matter what

Did you know that Cicely Tyson was the first black woman to wear her hair naturally on television? (noted on page 188) From both a physical and mental aspect one thing Cicely does unconditionally is speak the truth. She never hides her true self.

Dream big and be intentional with your values

Trust your instincts overall and relentlessly persevere no matter the cards you are dealt. Those are your values talking! Don’t settle. Stay focused. Know your vision.

Invest in yourself, always

No one else can make this happen but YOU. Cicely spent many years of her life living in extremely limited and difficult situations. Whether it be societal or familial, she took clear note of what she needed to do to change life for both her and her daughter.

Join us in conversation for more gems like these alongside another incredible co-host. Massive thank you to our dear friend Chante Harris for leading us through a deep and eye-opening conversation- we adore you!
